ပုဂံ | ba1-gun2 - Pagan (Bagan), an ancient city and a UNESCO World Heritage (ˈher-ə-tij 🔊) Site in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. The formal name used at the time, according to Myazedi pillar script, was အရိမဒ္ဒနာပုရ် | | a-ri1-ma1-da1-na2-pu2 meaning the country that defeated the enemy. The last syllable was probably pronounced like "pore" in Singapore (Singa + pura = lion city), which was a variant form of "pura" or city as in အမရပူရ | a-ma1-ra1 pu2-ra1 - Amarapura.
