It takes three words to say "I love you" in English. No word is needed in Burmese — a silence, and yet you know. Two words are enough, sometimes. Just give two words and take nothing.

Is that simple enough? In this lesson, we will learn the most useful simple Burmese phrases with two words. Just two-words — nothing more. All of those colloquial phrases will have either the verb (action word) or adjective (descriptive word) followed by the ending word. Those ending "particles" and "postpositional markers" are further explained in Grammar Study Materials. Take note of similar patterns.

The same words for heavy and light in weight can be used to say if the soup is thick with heavy flavor or if it is thin, watery, and not salty enough.

The same word for "cold" could mean "peaceful", and the word is used to describe a nice person with pleasant disposition and good manners. Such a person stays away from gossips and mindless talks.

NOTE (1): "It is xxxx", "He is xxxx", "She is xxxx", I feel xxxx", "You are xxxx" all have the pattern "xxxx deare2 ". You can omit He/She/It/You/I if it is clear enough who or what you are talking about. So, you can give an appreciative look to the nice dress that the lady in front of you is wearing and make a simple comment: လှတယ် | hla1 deare2. MP3 Audio File You are talking about something beautiful in front of you. It could be the dress or the lady or both in front of you, and not about someone or something from across the street you are not even looking.
NOTE (2): In English, the verb "am" is used for both "I'm tired" and "I'm a doctor". Burmese deare2 can be used to describe what I am physically or mentally feeling: hot, cold, bored, tired, hungry, etc.. Post-positional marker တယ် | deare2 CANNOT be used to describe what I am: Carpenter, Christian, Canadian, Crazy, Caring person, etc.. That's next.

Use the simple ပါ | ba2 to describe who you are. Omit "I" if it is clear that it is about you. For example, someone asks you what's your religion. You answer:

All those phrases can be the answer "yes" to questions: "Are you going?", "Are you buying?, etc..

ဝပြီ | wa1 byi2 - (stomach filled + has reached certain condition) - I'm full; can't eat anymore. MP3 Audio File

ကောင်းပြီ | koun3 byi2 - (good + has reached certain condition) - OK, good! MP3 Audio File

Use this phrase to give an OK, permission, or agreement.

ကန်ပြီ | kun2 byi2 - (kick + has reached certain condition) - He kicks! MP3 Audio File

This is a frequently used phrase by sports commentators in soccer matches.

ကုန်ပြီ | kone2 byi2 - (be empty + has reached certain condition) - It's all gone; sold out. MP3 Audio File

The shopkeeper tells you the item you are looking for has been sold out.

ပြီးပြီ | pyi3 byi2 - (finish + has reached certain condition) - Done! MP3 Audio File

The maid says the room service was completed.
